Euro Top Mattress: What You Need to Know

AEuro topmattressian improved version of pillow top mattresses. It might have been made from the thought of givinga softpadding above a firm mattress to make it more softer.

Many people are confused about the euro top and pillow top mattresses. There are some who believe they are one and the same. But this is not true. While euro top mattress is an improved version of apillowtop, all pillow tops mattresses are not euro tops.

What Is the Difference Between Euro Top Mattress and Pillow Top Mattresses?

Pillow top mattresses are made by providing soft padding of memory foam, latex foam, gel, wool and so on over an innerspring mattress. Euro top mattresses, on the other hand, are typically made of fiberfill or foam which is of better quality. Also, the padding tends to be thicker.

Pillow tops are made by sewing an extra layer of padding above the firm mattress. This is obvious as the two layers can be seen separately and sometimes there can be a gap between the two layers. But in euro top mattresses, there is an additional padding under the top layer. This not only covers the entire top surface of the mattress but flushes with the edges which make the padding layer look like a part of the mattress. This gives a plush look to the bed.

Another factor is durability. The euro top mattresses tend to be more durable than the pillow tops because they do not displace like the padding of the pillow top type. As they are made of better quality material and are packed denser, they can provide more support and reduces motion transfer compared to pillow top mattresses.

Where Can I Buy Euro Top Mattresses?

Though they are not as popular as pillow-top mattresses in India, euro tops mattresses are available in many big stores. Many small shops have also understood the growing popularity of these types and are making them available for their customers.

You can also buy them through online stores, which can give you very good offers. But if you are a person who prefers to have a first-hand experience of the bed, it is better that you go to a nearby store and get the feeling before buying.

How Much Does a Euro Top Mattress Cost?

Euro top mattresses cost a little more than pillow top mattresses in India. Some argue that they are not affordable to common people. This is not very true. You can find the low-end ones at nearly Rs 10,000. But if you are looking for a decent euro top mattress you may have to pay almost twice that amount. High-end mattresses can cost up to Rs 50,000 in India.

Are They Available in All Sizes?

Yes. Euro top mattresses come in all sizes like twin, full, queen and king. But you may not find all the sizes in a local store. You may have a search for them in branded shops likes IKEA or may have to depend on online stores.

When Are They Best Used?

Euro top mattresses are much softer compared to pillow tops. Hence they find use as a therapeutic mattress. It is almost as comfortable as a memory foam mattress but has the firmness of an innerspring mattress too. If you are a person do desires these qualities in your bed, you can opt for a euro top mattress.

What Is the Expected Life Span of a Euro Top Mattress?

Unlike pillow top mattresses whose durability is frowned upon, euro top mattresses have a longer life span. The denser and better quality padding does not get displaced easily. Also, the probability of sagging of the spring core is considerably reduced because of the support provided by the top layer.

What Are the Benefits of Using a Euro Top Mattress?

Euro top mattresses have many pros compared to many other types of mattresses available in the market. They are as follows:

Comfortable

The comfort provided by the outer soft layer of the Euro top mattress is unrivaled.  They are much comfortable than pillow tops to which they are always compared. The body contouring and even weight distribution by these mattresses make sure that you get a very sweet slumber.

Another factor which makes a euro top mattress much comfortable is that it is firmer on the edges and has more cushioning in the center. This makes getting in and out of the bed much easier and adds durability.

If you all you expect from your mattress is a comfortable sleep, you can choose euro top mattresses.

Support

Many soft mattresses like the memory foam give a ‘quicksand experience’ to the sleeper where he feels like sinking into the bed. This happens because they don’t have a strong core to support a person’s weight.

The innerspring coils in the core of the euro top mattress make sure that it gives you necessary firmness. The lumbar support is provided by this firm innerspring core. The quality top layers allow you to get the experience of sleeping on a soft surface. Thus the Euro top mattresses can be considered as a middle ground between too soft and too firm mattresses.

Health Benefits

The major problem with the firmness of the innerspring mattress is that the hard surface aggravates pain in the pressure points. This problem is effectively solved by the euro top mattresses which does not give pressure to the points of contact in the body by distributing the body weight evenly. This protects the softer tissues too.

The joint pains are found to be reduced by the use of euro top mattresses. Hence they are used as therapeutic beds in hospitals and geriatric care centers.

Durability

The Euro top mattresses are much durable compared to their pillow top counterparts. The higher quality, density and thickness of the padding facilitates this.

What Are the Cons of the Euro Top Mattress?

The disadvantages of euro top mattresses are listed below:

Costly

The Euro top mattresses are costly compared to pillow top ones. Though the higher quality of the Euro top mattresses is pointed out by the manufacturers as the reason for this, many argue that they can buy decent memory foam mattresses at the same cost.

Trapping body heat

This is the greatest disadvantage of a euro top mattress. As there is no gap between the topmost layer and the innerspring core mattress, air circulation cannot take place and hence they become hotter compared to pillow top mattresses.

For a country with hot and warm climate like India, this is a huge issue as it can make the sleeper sweaty and uncomfortable.

Bed bugs and dust mites

The innerspring core can house insects like bed bugs which can disturb your sleep. The ample and comfortable space inside the core of the mattress is what causes the problem. Once bed bugs make a colony inside the mattress,it is almost impossible to get them out. Many people avoid this type of mattresses because of this fear.

Not portable

Euro top mattresses are heavy and it is difficult to move it. This makes dusting and cleaning hard. Dust gets accumulated in the mattress because of this.

Cleaning a Cotton Mattress

What Are Cotton Mattresses Made Of?

Cotton plant

These types of mattresses are made of layers of cotton which is a natural fiber. It is usually stuffed inside a fabric covering usually made of water proof material. This is the case of the pure cotton mattress.

Cotton is also used in some Hybrid mattress, innerspring mattress and so on to make the outer layer of the bed. This makes them more comfortable.

When Are Cotton Mattresses Best Used?

Cotton mattresses are very comfortable and are available at a reasonable price. Moreover, India is one of the largest producers of cotton in the world. So cotton is easily available in the country. These factors make them the most preferred type of mattress in India.

Also, the health benefits of using a 100% natural material like cotton overcome all the disadvantages of it and are preferred by those who avoid synthetic materials.

Are Cotton Mattresses Available in All Sizes?

Yes. Because of its popularity and high sales, cotton mattresses are made in all sizes in India. You can find a twin, double, queen and king sizes in almost all local stores. Modern versions of the mattress like hybrid mattress are not found everywhere but are available on online shops and big stores like IKEA.

How Much Does a Cotton Mattress Cost?

Cotton mattresses are not much costly compared to other types of beds available in India. The cost of the mattress depends on the brand of the manufacturer. But they are available from Rs 2000 onwards. Hence they are affordable to common people.

Is Cotton Mattress 100% Natural?

Cotton is a soft, fluffy fiber that grows in a protective case, around the seeds of the cotton plants of the genus Gossypium. The fiber is pure cellulose. It can be spun into thread to make textile. Good quality cotton is used to make most of the available mattresses in the market.  So mostly all beds are natural. But in some rare cases, synthetic materials are also used. So care should be taken to verify whether the bed that you choose is 100% natural or not.

What Are the Pros of a Cotton Mattress?

Cotton mattresses have many advantages over other types of mattresses.

Comfort

Cotton mattresses are very soft. They provide a good cushioning effect and which guarantees a comfortable and uninterrupted sleep. The comfort provided by the cotton mattress is one of the factors that make it a popular choice of the people.

Natural

Most mattresses available today are made of synthetic materials. The chemicals used in making these materials have different effects on different people. Many are not at all affected by them, but some become very allergic. Some allergic reactions can become very acute and damage a person’s health. Moreover, some synthetic mattresses like memory foam have the property of off-gassing by which they release Benzene, a cancer-causing chemical. Though researchers are yet to arrive at conclusive evidence, they can cause health problems to those using them.

Cotton mattresses, on the other hand, do not cause any of these problems as they are made of natural cotton.

Air Circulation

In a country with a hot and humid atmosphere like India, sleeping in some modern mattresses can be very uncomfortable. Many complain that they sweat profusely at night in the costly mattress that they have purchased. This is because they trap the body heat and does not dissipate it.

The cotton mattress does not exhibit this problem. As they are natural fiber material, they are highly breathable; meaning they permit air circulation. Thus the body heat doesn’t get trapped in the mattress and make your sleep uncomfortable.

Moisture Absorption

The breathability of the cotton mattress is not just the feature that makes it suitable for use in a hot and humid climate. They have a natural wicking property which absorbs the sweat of the sleeper. This helps to keep the skin dry which translates to a night of good comfortable sleep. The absorbed sweat does not cause any problem as it will dry off when the mattress is put in the sun for a few hours.

This property of the mattress is suitable for sweaty sleepers. So if you live in a hot climate or if you sweat too much, you will find cotton mattress best suited for you.

Durability

Many high costing mattresses lose their comfort after very few years of regular use. If you have children who love playing in their beds, the mattresses will get ruined much faster. Some mattresses like the inner spring exhibit the property of sagging by which the elasticity of the spring is lost and you feel like falling into a pit when lying down.

The cotton mattress does not have any of these problems. They are highly durable and normally have a life span of almost 15 years. Even when the cotton is displaced in the mattress due to aging, it can be refilled and used again. This avoids the dilemma people face when they have to purchase a new mattress every five or so years.

Low Motion Transfer

The bouncy mattresses are not suitable if you have a partner who tosses and turns at night. The waves created by the movement of your partner is transferred to you and disturbs your sleep. Cotton mattresses absorb this energy and do not transmit the waves. So you can sleep comfortably even if you have a restless partner at your side.

Kid on cotton mattress

What Are the Cons of a Cotton Mattress?

There are some disadvantages also for cotton mattresses.

Bed Bugs and Mites

Cotton mattresses are prone to dust mite and bed bug attacks. As cotton is a natural product, these insects are not repelled by it. Once the bed becomes infested with mites or bugs, it is very difficult to exterminate them. So constant care should be taken to protect the mattress from their attack.

Pressure points

These type of mattresses can sometimes cause pressure point pains to some people. This happens when the cotton layers become hard due to aging. Side sleepers are the ones who are most affected by this problem as they experience pain in their hip and shoulders. This makes the cotton mattress unsuitable for use in hospitals and other medical purposes.

Fire Hazard

Natural cotton can catch fire very easily. Hence cotton mattresses have very low resistance towards fire hazard. This is a dangerous problem especially if you have a toddler who experiments everything. If you are planning to buy a cotton mattress, make sure that you do not face any fire threats.

Coir Mattress – The Coconut Fiber Mattress

Can mattresses be made of coconut? What silly question isn’t it? If you ask this to anyone living in the western world, they would probably laugh at you. But the answer to the seemingly idiotic query is ‘Yes’. The coir mattress, which is quite familiar to everyone, is made up of processed coconut husk! Thefibresrecovered from the husk of the coconut is called coir. It is a naturally strong fibre which doesn’t absorb water. In fact, it is the only natural fibre resistant to salt water and hence it is used for marine applications.

Inside structure of Coir Mattress

When Was Coir Mattresses First Introduced?

There are records to prove that coir is being used by humans for the past 4,000 years. It can be estimated that coir beds were used for sleeping around this time by people in South Asia, where coconut palms are indigenously grown.   Because of the benefits of this type of beds, travelers and traders would have adopted them and thus coir mattresses became a ubiquity.

When Are Coir Mattresses Best Used?

The unique property of coir bed is that it provides very good ventilation. This helps for a cool and comfortable sleep especially if you are living in a warm climate like India. The mattress is also famous for its firmness. If you are a person who prefers a cool and firm bed, you can opt for coir mattress.

What Is Rubberized Coir Mattress?

Rubberized Coir Mattress

The coir used in coir mattresses is sometimes treated in a latex solution to make it more resilient. The end product of such a process is called rubberized coir. The advantage of the process is that it helps the bed to conform to the body shape of the sleeper, thus providing a more comfortable sleep.

Mostly, rubberized coir is used in coir mattresses. The softness of the bed is thus improved.

Isn’t It Uncomfortable to Sleep Over a Heap of Coir?

Coir mattresses are not just made up of coir. Though coir is the base or core of the mattress, many layers cover the coir up. Usually there will be the Bonnelli coil, the pad used as insulation and the cotton outer layer. Sometimes polyurethane foam is punched together with the coir. The foam comes in the center with coir sandwiching the foam from top and bottom.

Because of the insulating pads and the cotton outer layer, you will never feel like sleeping over a heap of coir. So don’t get concerned over that.

Where Are They Available?

India, being one of the largest producers of coconut and coir, is a huge market for coir mattress. The popularity of coir beds surpasses any other type of mattress in India. Hence they are available in almost all stores, small and big, throughout the country. So if you are looking to buy one, you can surely find it in your local furniture shop. You can also find coir mattresses online on retailers like Amazon.

How Much Does a Coir Mattress Cost?

coconut-bedding-prevue-pet-products-bpv105-sterilized-natural-coconut-fiber-for-bird-nest-coconut-coir-bedabeast-equivalent-eco-earth-coconut-fibercoir

They do not cost much compared to other types of mattresses in India. A decent coir mattress can be brought at a cost of around Rs 7,000. Though the cost varies according to the brand of the maker, they are comparatively cheaper.

Are Coir Mattresses Available in All Sizes?

Yes, they are. You can find coir mattresses in different sizes like twin, full, queen and king. It was not the case until recently. But with the advent of different brands which competes with each other, all different sizes of coir mattress began flooding the market. So you won’t have to return empty handed from a store because you couldn’t find the mattress that fits your size requirement.

What Are the Benefits of Using a Coir Mattress?

Coir mattresses have many pros compared to other types of mattresses. They are listed below.

Good Ventilation

The greatest advantage of using the coir mattress is that it provides very good ventilation. The coir core facilitates this by allowing air circulation. A cool sleep is hence guaranteed. This is very suitable for hot and warm climates. India, being a tropical country with hot summer and warm climate year-round, is a subcontinent where coir mattresses come in handy.

Hygroscopic property

Damp and humid climates can provide a person with disturbed sleep. Coir mattresses have the property of absorbing moisture. This will provide a good sleep to sweaty sleepers. Very few mattresses have this property.

Good Support

The coir mattresses are firm and hence can provide good support to the sleeper. Some people do not like the ‘sinking experience’ of soft mattresses. The responsiveness of such mattresses are very high and hence they completely adjust to the body shape of the sleeper. The body contouring has its negative sides too. The sleeper feels like he is trapped in quicksand. Those who dislike the experience always opt for firm mattresses like coir beds which gives the necessary support to the sleeper.

Natural

Unlike modern mattresses which are made of materials that have nothing natural about it, Coir is a completely natural and biodegradable substance made from the husk of a coconut. This helps to prevent the problems associated with the usage of materials like memory foams which have proven to emit carcinogenic gasses like Benzene.

If you want nothing to do with such chemicals, you can opt for a coir mattress which is completely environment-friendly.

Low Price

Coir mattresses are not as costly as other mattresses available in India. They are available from Rs 1000 onwards. Even decent mattresses of branded companies are available at a cost of nearly Rs 7000.

This low price is a great relief for anyone who is concerned about the sleeping apparatus draining the very little savings that they have acquired with years of hard work.

Health Benefits

A coir mattress is recommended by doctors to the children and elderly who don’t have joint pains. This is because the firm surface helps for the bone development of the children and gives good lumbar support to the elderly.

What Are the Disadvantages of Coir Mattresses?

Not Durable

The coir mattresses are not as durable as other types. They can only be used for 5 to 10 years. Another factor is that you cannot do any maintenance to make it usable after its life span.

Non Responsive

The firmness of the coir mattress another factor that affects its popularity. It can aggravate pressure point pains and is not suitable for those with body and joint pains. Side sleepers also complain of the hip and shoulder pain they experience after regularly sleeping on a coir mattress.

So the coir mattress is not for you if you like to sleep in a soft mattress which has body contouring properties.

Sagging

Like innerspring mattresses, coir beds are also prone to sagging. This affects the comfort level and the durability of the mattress. Flipping the mattress over on regular intervals can keep this problem at bay for a while.

Coir coming out of the mattress

Some low-end coir mattress has the problem of the coir protruding out of the mattress after some years. This is a very disturbing phenomenon as the coir can pierce your skin and disturb the sleep. But decent mattresses do not have this problem

Air Mattress: The Carry Around Mattress

Whoever invented the air mattress must have been obsessed with the idea of sleeping in the cloud. He or she would have been daydreaming one fine morning and while looking at the changing shapes of the clouds, an idea would have struck: Why don’t I fill air in my bed? The rest, as they say, is history.

What Are Air Mattresses Made Of?

Air! as simple as that. But of course you need something to trap this volatile stuff. That’s why we use an inflatable bladder which is usually made of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC).  But modern air mattresses are using textile-reinforced urethane plastic which is more elastic and less brittle than Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Rubber air mattresses are also available in India.

Air Bed

How to Fill the Air Inside the Mattress?

Well, if you are a contender in the world’s strongest man competition, you can blow the air in with your mouth. If you are a normal human being, there are some different ways to inflate an air bed.

Using Mechanical Pumps

Hand pumps or foot pumps are available which will get the job done with a little effort. They can easily be carried around if you are going camping with your air mattress.

Using An Air Compressor

If you have an air compressor at home, you have to just connect it to the air mattress and it will fill up in a matter of seconds.

Using An Electric Pump

You can always fill up your mattress with the help of an electric pump. Only thing is that you should have access toelectricalpower supply. If so this is the easiest method.

Use Mattresses With a Built-in Pump

Some modern air mattresses are equipped with built-in pumps. All you have to do is plug it in or unscrew the cap and press the inflate button. It will be filled before you change to your pajamas.

How Much Does an Air Mattress Cost?

Air beds are much cheaper compared to other types of mattresses and they are available from Rs 1000 onwards.

What Are the Benefits of Using an Air Mattress?

Air mattresses have many pros compared to other types and they are detailed below.

Portability

The greatest advantage of an air bed is that it can be deflated and can be taken anywhere. They are best suited for camping. As camping air mattresses are available in many different sizes, they fit into any type of tents. Even there are mattresses that you can use inside your SUV.

Weightless

As air fills up more than 95 percent of the space inside the air mattress it is of lower weight. It can hence be moved easily.

Pink inflatable air mattress

Variable Firmness

Many people prefer air mattresses because you can easily customize the firmness of the bed. Some people want a softer mattress on some nights and a firm one on others. This can easily be achieved by regulating the air pressure. This is a unique feature of the air mattresses.

This also allows you to be a good host by giving your guest a personalized bed for the night.

Back Pain

Though air mattresses are not recommended by doctors for those with backache, it is suitable for a comfortable sleep. For those with intermittent back pains, the firmness of the air mattress can be adjusted to accommodate their varying needs.

No Sagging

Sagging is the biggest problem for all types of mattresses. After years of use, the firmness of a particular part of the bed gives away and the sleeper feels like lying on a hammock. But the air mattress always appears as good as new. If you feel like there is a sagging, just inflate it a little more.

Durability

The PVC made air mattresses are highly durable. Where a normal mattress lasts for 7 or so years, air mattresses last for more than 15 years. For a built-in pump type air bed, the pump usually fails before the bed. But it can easily be replaced.

No insect Infestation

Mattresses are usually the favorite dwelling place for ticks, mites and bed bugs. But as the air mattresses are made of plastic or rubber, there is absolutely no threat from this little nuisances.

If you hate to sleep on a bug infested bed, you should surely prefer an air mattress

What Are the Cons of Using an Air Mattress?

It can get hot

Because of the plastic material used for making air beds, it won’t breathe well. This makes it difficult to regulate body temperature while sleeping. Moreover, the air inside the mattress can get hot and will give you a sweaty sleep.

Problems With the Pumps

You have to depend on a pump if you want to use an air mattress. If you are using a mechanical pump, you have to expend some energy on it. If it is an electric pump, it can create noise which is not so pleasing on sleeping hours.  The built pumps in the mattress can give away causing more problems.

If you are going camping with an air mattress, you have an additional load of the pump to carry around in your back pack.

Motion Transfer

Another problem with air mattresses is motion transfer. If you sleep with a partner, this can be difficult as each movement from their part will rock you. So it is better to avoid air mattresses if you are a light sleeper.

Less Comfort

Air mattresses are not great if you give preference to comfort. Though you can sleep on it once in a while, it would not be very easy to make it your permanent bed unless you go for costly and well-upholstered air beds.

Buying Memory Foam Mattress – A Guide

With the advent of online mattress brands and the high rates of competition, consumers are getting higher quality and improved convenience at affordable costs. As a consumer, it is an exciting time to be in the market for mattresses. There are different types of foam taking over the mattress space – memory foam being the most popular one. Memory foam is viscoelastic, which makes contour the curves of the body. This was designed to provide support and increase circulation and relieve the stress on joints. In this piece, we discuss the right way of buying a memory foam mattress.

Who Invented the Memory Foam Mattress?

It might surprise you to know that NASA developed the memory foam in 1970 to provide adequate support and cushioning for the pilots and passengers. Now, you can find memory foam in your mattresses, pillows and even seat cushions.

memory foam mattress

Many mattress manufacturers combine several layers of different materials to combine into a mattress that provides different levels of support and comfort. Most types of memory foams available offer similar features when it comes to comfort, such as contouring the body and reducing pressure points, minimizing decreased breathability and level if sinking into the mattress, responding to pressure and bouncing back to original form on the removal of pressure, etc.

Buying a Memory Foam Mattress

How to choose the best memory foam mattress option for you:

Firmness and Durability

One of the first things to look at while choosing a mattress is the level of firmness. Contrary to popular beliefs, extra soft mattresses may not be the epitome of comfort and luxury. While firmness preference is a subjective choice, it contributes to health, lumbar support and uninterrupted sleep.

So How Do You Pick the Right Firmness for You?

High-density mattresses provide maximum firmness and are the most durable. Those about five and six pounds (2.27-2.72) kilos are considered to be high in density while buying a memory foam mattress. Although very firm initially, it will adjust itself with your body with use, and relieve pressure points. Even though they are expensive, they will also last for up to 10 years, making them some of the most durable mattresses.

If you prefer a really soft feel to your mattress, then the better option for you may be a low-density one of about two to three pounds (0.91-1.36 kilos). You will get the feeling of really sinking into these mattresses. These mattresses will be far less costly than the higher density ones, but also less durable. These may not last you longer than around 6 years.

A Girl sleeping on a memory foam mattress

Density

To settle for a less costly option, you may choose a mattress with mid-density foam. Being four to five pounds (1.81-2.27 kilos), they may be almost as comfortable as the high-density ones, at the same time a little cheaper than them. These also last for up to 8 years or more, if they are made of high-quality foam.

ILD Rating

Every piece of research about memory foam mattress would mention ILD rating at least once. Checking the ILD ratings of each layer of your mattress is also important, as it indicates the level of firmness. Higher ILDs will make the mattress firm and resistant, providing support for your body, while the low ILD ones will feel softer to you.

But What Is ILD Rating?

ILD rating (Indentation Load Deflection rating) or IFD (Impression Force Deflection) is the pressure needed to indent the foam by 25% or 4 inches. Usually mattress ILDs can range anywhere between 6-40. Most people prefer an ILD rating of 25-35 ILD. It is advisable to go for higher ILDs of 20-40 at the bottom layers and lower ILDs of 10-11 for the top layers. Thus you will get a softer feel to sleep on while having firmer support.

Layers

Brands are working tirelessly to create a unique differentiating point to their mattresses. Often, the differentiating agent lies in the layers. Usually, a memory foam mattress is not only made of foam. This would be too soft for the sleeper. Instead, brands add layers and each layer adds to the feature of the mattress. Cooling gels, latex foam, breathable fabrics and so on play an important role in the sleeping experience of the user.

Chemicals

Unfortunately, chemicals are a reality of the world we live in. Harmful chemicals can be found in everything from our foods to the mattresses we sleep on. Some memory foam mattresses have chemicals like formaldehyde, benzene, and naphthalene. Some manufacturers have also added isocyanates to the mattresses that can lead to asthma. Harmful flame retardants in the mattresses have also contributed to the ill-effects on the user’s health.

Can we say for sure?

Of course, there are many checks that are put in place to regulate harmful chemicals used by manufacturers. However, since every person is different, every mattress manufacturing process is different and every reaction is different, it can get difficult to pinpoint the blame on the industry. However, certifications like the CertiPUR-US exist to ensure that you are not being sold anything that is harmful to your body. However, these certified mattresses aren’t available in India.

Cleanliness

When you are buying a memory foam mattress, choose one that has foam that is easy to clean. It is important to keep your sleeping surface clean and free of dust, mites and other harmful pollutants. So choosing one that is easy to clean will stand you in good stead. In addition, mattress protectors can further keep your sleeping environment clean.

Using simple tools like a hand-held vacuum cleaner when you change the sheets will prevent dust and debris from setting in. With tougher stains, you can use baking soda and thorough scrub. This can also help with urine smells and stains that can go unnoticeable at first.

Size

Measure your bed or cot and choose a mattress that will it well on it as well as can be supported by the wooden or metal frame of your bed. Both of these are important, as it may cause your mattress more wear and tear if it is placed on the wrong kind of support. You can read about picking the right mattress size here.

Online Purchase Options

Even if you are looking for mattresses online, it will be a good idea to go to a physical store once to check out the actual feel and comfort of what you have picked. What you read may not match your expectations when it comes to reality. Spend 20-30 minutes on each choice before finalizing on one, and then you may go ahead and order it online if that is the better option for you. Online mattress brands now offer lengthy trial periods so you can make the right choice without losing out on your money.

Reviews

Last but not least, read up reviews from actual customers, and see what they have written. Also, look at the reputation of the company and outlet you have chosen. These go a long way into giving you an insight into what you may be spending a lot of your resting time on.

When Is Memory Foam NOT the Perfect Choice?

  1. Memory foam mattresses tend to run hot as the high density traps the heat within the cot. If you are a hot sleeper or sensitive to heat, you might want to choose a memory foam mattress that inculcate a cooling technology in their foam. This way you don’t end up increasing your body heat at night.
  2. Memory foam mattresses, though soft, is not the softest mattress around. Soft mattresses tend to have adverse effects on spinal and lumbar support. The medium firmness of memory foam is what makes it ideal for those suffering from back pain. However, if you are looking for an extra plush bed that sinks in as soon as you lie in it, memory foam might not be the ideal choice for you.

Mattresses are a long-term investment and taking time to consider all of the points mentioned above will be useful in making sure you are not making a dud investment or one that will run out on you sooner than you have planned.

Types of Mattress

Besides the commonly known cotton mattress, there is a wide range of mattresses available in various material composition and combinations today.

Cotton Mattress

Cotton mattresses of high quality are comfortable and offer great support to the body especially in hot and humid climates. These mattresses are usually found in the top as a cover, whereas the core, the ‘mainframe” of the mattress, can contain material such as spring, memory foam, latex and hybrid which could be a combination of two or more.

Most cotton top mattresses usually have a spring core, and often interspersed with a layer of memory foam or latex. For hot & humid climates, these make an excellent choice for their coolness and durability too. Latex foam mattress or memory foam mattress conforms to the shape of your body giving you a restful sleep.

Firmness is determined by the gauge:  in the spring mattress the lower the gauge the thicker is the spring. For those who sleep on their back and require a firm mattress a gauge of say 12.5 coils are perfect, but not recommended for those who sleep on their sides. So the position of your body when at sleep is also very crucial to the type of mattress you should buy.

Cotton Mattresses are known to embed the pocket spring technology also known as the Marshall coil spring system. This allows for motion separation between the sides of the bed. Thus, when your partner comes in late to bed, the movement will not transfer to your side, giving you uninterrupted sleep.

Memory Foam Mattress

Memory foam is often referred to as viscoelastic polyurethane foam as it adapts to your weight and shape and temperature. It derives its name from its capability, as it moulds to your body retaining a “memory” of its impression. Memory foam is used near the top of the mattress providing you relief and comfort, and the interior core is always of a more studier foam. Here too, you will find many kinds of foam mattresses, the most common being the traditional foam, the Gel memory foam mattress, and the plant-based foam mattress.

When buying a memory foam mattress do check the choice for an open cell or closed cell foam mattress. Each has its own functionality at play. Nevertheless, the open cell foam mattress makes for a greater degree of choice over the closed cell foam mattress when it comes to having a good night’s rest.

Coir Mattress

The coir mattress offers the combination of an airy, breathable mattress with latex resistance. It is 100per centenvironmentally friendly with high moisture absorption. A coir mattress provides for great spine alignment and for its non-sagging attribute.

Latex Mattress

This like the coir mattress is 100 percent naturally sourced, chemical free and biodegradable. A highly resilient material it makes for a lush feel and provides ample body support. These mattresses are known for their durable nature as well as being highly comfortable. Since they are eco-friendly, the youth have taken a real shine towards latex mattresses.

Mattress Warranty

Lifetime warranty for a mattress sounds unbelievable, right? Mattresses do have a lifetime warranty. However, they have a lifespan and usually, fall short of the warranty length. Normal wear and tear of a mattress that includes – sagging, discoloration, or lumpiness, over the long term – cannot be taken under warranty. Nevertheless, the sagging depth of a mattress does come under warranty – coils that burst from the side or seams come undone – are all under warranty. Further, buying a reputed branded mattress will ensure you the required warranty. Following certain rules, like rotation and/or flipping of the mattress occasionally as per requirements will ensure and protect your warranty.

When looking for a warranty do verify – the kind of warranty available, if it can be voided, and the prorated and non-prorated coverage offered under the warranty.

Mattress Price Range

Mattresses can range from the minimum to the most expensive pricerange depending on the material and composition thickness and durability. Size of the mattress – King-size or Queen-size, also varies in the price range, from as low as Rs 4,000/- to as high as Rs.1 Lakh depending on the brand. A coir mattress can come as cheap as Rs 7,649/- when compared to the Memory foam mattress with a cooling gel that can be priced as high as Rs 18,999/-. Nothing beats the 10 inch Queen Pocket spring mattress whose price can range from Rs.

10 Popular Types of Mattresses

A good night’s sleep is of utmost importance in order to maintain good health and a refreshed mind and body. Apart from a suitable bed, comfortable bedding and ambiance, the right type of mattress play a very important role in ensuring this. The choices available in the market today could be a little overwhelming, especially for first-timers. Knowing what goes into your mattress and the factors that provide comfort will help you make the right choice. To ease this process a little for you, we have made a comprehensive list of different types of mattresses, with a little information on what’s inside them.

Mattresses made their first appearance almost 80,000 years ago according to findings by many archaeologists. And in the many centuries that followed, it has undergone significant changes. Today, there are umpteen types of mattresses available to suit every type of sleeper, and shopping for the ideal one may even seem a daunting task for most.

Types of Mattresses:

Innerspring Mattress

Innerspring or coil mattresses are among the most well-known type of mattress and have been around since the mid-19thcentury. These ‘bouncy’ mattresses are made up of three parts: the foundation, the core, andthe upholstery or the comfort layer. The foundation is the bottom layer that comes in contact with the bed and is usually made of wool. It provides the base for the core layer, which is what houses the coils. The number of coils and its distribution within the core dictates the ‘springiness’ of the mattress as well as how well it adjusts to the body.

Innerspring mattresses are the most common mattresses and are generally preferred because they are available at affordable prices. That said, it is also true that an innerspring mattress is the one that will need replacement sooner than other types of mattresses. Innerspring is made up of a number of steel coils inside the mattress. The number of coils indicates the quality of the mattress. More the coils, higher is the quality. They are then padded and upholstered with softer material for comfort. The coils could vary in size, shape, and design, and are good for people who sleep on their backs, stomachs and sides. They support the body and contour is while asleep.

Types of Coils

Continuous coils

One single wire bent into S-shape forms the whole support system. This makes it longer lasting and affordable.

Bonnell coils

When assembled together, they look like helixes or spirals. They fall in the mid-range price category.

Offset coils

Similar to Bonnel coils, the only difference is that their ends are flattened out. They form hinges which help support the body and take on its shape. They are durable and strong.

Marshall or pocketed coils

Also known as wrapped coils and encased coils, they are different from the rest. They are separate from each other. This provides even more support than the others

Memory Foam Mattress

Known in the industry as viscoelastic mattresses, these mattresses are made of low-resilience polyurethane foam (LRPu). It is called memory foam because of its ability to ‘remember’ the shape of the body because of its reaction to body heat. Due to this unique ability, the foam remains in the shape it is pushed into and resets several seconds after the pressure is removed. This kind of mattress eases the pressure on joints and spreads the body weight uniformly, minimizing the chance of tossing and turning in sleep. The materials in memory foam mattresses are usually allergen-resistant and do not attract dust particles as much as other types of mattresses. On the flipside, these mattresses tend to heat more than other types, and can be uncomfortable during warmer months. The ‘sinking’ reaction of memory foam can also be a cause of discomfort for many users because of its restraining effect.

Gel Mattress

The gel mattress came as a relief to the one major drawback of the memory foam, which was retention of heat due to the material used. The gel came as a solution to this and manufacturers started filling the foam with gel, which absorbed the heat from the foam, making it much cooler.

Latex Mattress

With features very similar to the memory foam, the only main difference in the latex mattress is that it is less cushiony, but is plusher. It also tends to absorb less heat. Latex can be synthetic, as well as natural. Synthetic latex is made from petroleum, while natural latex is made from rubber tree sap.

These were the predecessors to memory foam mattresses and are generally constructed of natural latex harvested from rubber trees. These mattresses also adapt to the body, but are quicker to regain its shape once the pressure is removed. They are long-lasting and comfortable making these mattresses one of the more popular types of mattresses in the market. If made of natural latex, these mattresses do not heat up as much as their memory foam cousins, and last several years without the need to flip them.

Latex mattresses are manufactured in two different ways:

Dunlop

Latex is poured into the mold in one single step, making the bottom of the mattress dense and the top soft.

Talalay

Latex is poured into the mold, then the air is vacuum suctioned out of it and then frozen.

Hybrid Mattress

The hybrid mattresses were manufactured with the intention of combining the benefits of both kinds of mattresses. A hybrid mattress will usually have spring coils at the bottom, and the foams or latex of preference on top, with a gelfoamusually forming the topmost layer. This makes the mattress cool to feel, provides the plushness of foam or latex, at the same time the strength and support of the coils at the bottom.

Water beds

Here’s a littleknown fact: waterbeds were invented by Scottishdoctor, Dr. Neill Arnott, as an aid to relieve bedsores even before innerspring mattresses. It is very soothing, as it gives the feel of floating on water. Waterbeds can either have free-flowing water, which means there is nothing inside to obstruct the water movement, or have chambers filled with water so that it limits the flow. The water chambers are padded with upholstery and usually rest on a platform. While these are heavy, they make for great flexible beds to lie on

Pillow-Top Mattress

Just as the name suggests, pillow tops are nothing but mattresses that have additional layers of padding and upholstery at the head of the mattress, which makes it look like, and gives the feel of, having pillows on the mattress. This can be several inches thick and are made of a variety of materials like cotton, wool, latex, and foam. These mattresses are on the expensive side.

Poly-Foam Mattress

Various types of foam mattresses are available today.Polyfoam issynthetic, and is made from petroleum and other chemicals. Each company has its own blend and any chemicals used are treated to make them harmless for regular and continuous use. They are available in various shapes and densities and provide a wide range of comfortable fits to choose from.

Air Beds

Airbeds are usually made with foam layers, and provide comfort similar to that of waterbeds. Instead of water, airbeds are filled with air, and keeps the mattress flexible and even, while the foam on top provides the necessary cushioning and comfort. Airbeds, however, need to be filled using a pump, which can be noisy, and hence are not liked by many. Other ways to fill in the air are even more tedious and time-consuming.

Organic Mattress

This one is for nature lovers and environment conservationists. Organic mattresses use natural material like plant products and natural fiber like coconut coir, organic wool, and recycled metal for its coils. They contain no foam and are eco-friendly and long-lasting. However, they are also costlier because the process of manufacturing these is more complicated and time-consuming and expensive. These might be an acquired taste, as the limitations of the product used also result in limitations in comfort. So, while they provide general and basic comfort, they will not be on par with say a latex or a foam as far as softness and bounce are concerned.

Based on personal preferences and firmness needs, selecting the right mattress type is a decision that will go a long way in ensuring that you get your beauty sleep, every time you hit the sack! Make sure to choose your mattress wisely!

Bed sizes: Mattress Dimensions Guide

Buying a mattress takes a little more thought and consideration than one might imagine at first. It is an investment that determines your comfort. And as in most things related to personal comfort, there are many options to choose from. However, the first thing to decide is the right one among all the bed sizes. Although it is an individual preference, putting some thought into your requirements will help you decide what the best buy for you will be. This way you can make completeutilisationof your mattress for as long as it lives.

What you need to think of before making your purchase online:

the number of occupants that intend to use the mattress

  • the size of the room in which it will be placed
  • the size of users
  • the age of the users

To help you decide the best bed size for you and most suitable option for you, we have compiled a detailed guide of mattress dimensions.

Crib – 27’’ X 52’’ : The smallest of all bed sizes

A mattress this size is usually a comfortable fit for children until they reach around 2 years of age. This of course, may vary from child to child, and is a generic estimate. This size fits most cribs, including ones with safety railings to keep your baby secure and prevent falls. They are also available in materials that are light and easilyportable, and are spill-safe or easy to clean. Usually, with cribs, the mattress needs to firm unlike what people believe.

A crib or a toddler mattress is usually firm, compared to the sink-in soft ones available for adults. This is because children in this age group are often unable to adjust their heads in case they turn in their sleep and end up face-down on the mattress. The resistance only makes the mattress firm, thus keeping the infants safe but in comfort at the same time.

Twin – 39’’ X 75’’ : No longer a toddler!

Twin beds are the smallest mattresses apart from the crib sized one. So, although they would be an uncomfortable fit for an adult, they make the perfect bed size for toddlers to move on to when they outgrow their cribs. This mattress size usually lasts children through their childhood, of course with exceptions for some growth spurts late into their teenage, making it a good choice for solo sleepers, and a long term one.

The size of this mattress makes it easy to store in congested spaces. They are also ideal for stacking up as bunk beds or placing side-by-side in shared rooms or even to be used as day beds.

Twin XL – 39’’ X 80’’: For the taller ones

alluring-gray-and-purple-bedroom-ideas-and-bedroom-awesome-gray-purple-bedroom-ideas-offers-cool-details

The Twin XL is only slightly longer and retains the same width as the Twin sized mattress. This serves as an ideal mattress for taller children, or college kids. Not being too wide, they are also the ones most often used in college dormitories and small apartments where space might be a constraint.

Their dimensions make them easy to transport and allow them to fit into most kinds of narrow spaces.

Full – 54’’ X 75’’: Cozy Comfort

The Full size mattress is also known as a double mattress to many. As there is a considerable increase in the size from the Twin XL they might make an economy-sized mattress for couples, but will still be a crunch of space. They are ideally suited for teenagers who have outgrown the Twin XL or for adults who have space constraints or are looking for a temporary solution.

They can easily be used as a guest bed for a single person and make for a good fit in smaller rooms or as extras.

Queen – 60’’ X 80’’: For the Committed

Queens are by far the most popular choice, and rightly so, for they are versatile in their utility. They make for a luxurious fit for single users, and at the same time are comfortable enough for couples. It fits in a moderate sized bedroom without crowding it. The Queen also has the potential to be the longest lasting mattress by far because this is a size that cannot be outgrown, and goes well in most flats and houses. It strikes a perfect balance between the luxury and economy sizes. What is more, it is also easily portable.

The popularity of it has also ensured that you have a wide range of bedding accessories at your disposal, that too with a wide range of prices to choose from.

King – 76’’ X 80’’ : Space Like Never Before

The King size mattress is the second largest of bed sizes and the most luxuriant mattress size. It gives ample room to couples, with as much space as a Twin size one would for each partner. Moreover, those with cuddly pets or young children will find that it also leaves a little extra room to easily accommodate them. Although the portability of this mattress is a little difficult, if you think of it as a long-term choice, you may find that this the most suitable one for your family.

It would be advisable to measure the dimensions of your sleeping space before buying it, as it is a big mattress and will need room for comfortable movement around the bed also. This mattress is best suited to a large bedroom.

California King – 72’’ X 84’’: The Biggest of All Bed Sizes

A tall person’s dream, the California King size mattress simply docks off 4’’ from the width of a King size, and adds it to the length, thus making this a perfect fit for those over 6 feet tall. It allows you more space to stretch out without feeling the need to crouch as compared to the King size. The California King is the biggest of all the bed sizes available and should be bought when you have ample space in the room.

Although 4’’ less wide than the King, it is still comfortable enough for a couple because of the extended leg room at the bottom. In fact, being narrower, it also has a slightly better advantage of fitting into a narrower space.

Smart Mattress for the Smart Generation!

Evolution of Mattress Types

We all know about below mattress types but what we might not know

  1. Memory foam mattress: the buzz these days was invented in 1950s (even before most of us were born, or TVs turned smart or phone turned smart. ). Yes and memory foam mattress was invented to absorb shock for Nasa scientists and for not sleeping or comfort or pain relief
  2. Hard mattress like coir mattress are good for back as they keep spine in natural shape but really bad for comfort? why? As they can not provide cushioning to our body curvatures like hips, shoulders ( oh if we all were straight bodies then yes may be we all would love coir mattress)

So isn’t it time to think – when everything in our life is becoming Smart why not our mattress as well? Is sleeping well more critical than watching TV? Is it more critical than smart home lighting system? Is it more critical than phone?

If yes – we all need to think hard – what are we sleeping on? How do we ensure we make smarter choices even for our mattresses?

What Is Smart Grid and Why Is It the World’s Most Smart Sleep Technology?

Mattress technology has not changed in India in the last many years. Hence The Sleep Company set itself on the mission to really step-change the quality of sleep for each one of us. And was born The Sleep Company – the outcome of years of research with each layer created with SLEEP SCIENCE as the foundation. It is No Memory Foam, No Spring or Latex – the only Mattress thatsmartly adapts to every human body type no matter what your weight is or sleeping position is.

Smart Grid is made from a hyper elastic polymer gel material which has properties of absorbing pressure and providing comfort to the different body part. The Grid has been designed to give a SOFT feeling on body curvatures like hips, shoulder while a FIRM feeling on back. This helps to reduce and avoids back pain and other body pains over time.

These walls buckle down on smaller body parts like hips, shoulders to CUDDLE them while the walls stay FIRM under bigger body parts like back to keep spine straight. This ensure more support vs. an orthopaedic mattresses while giving plush and cozy feeling.

Zero Partner Disturbance

The Smart Grid Layer isolates the motion so that even if your partner could dance the conga, while you’re fast asleep besides them.

Air Flow Technology

The open gird structure of the patented Smart Grid layer promotes air flow, it does not trap your body heat, and does not make you feel hot and stuffy at night.

Non-Toxic & Hypoallergenic

The Smart Grid is made from food grade polymers and uses non-VOCs (unlike foam) and is completely safe and healthy for you and your family.

How Is Smart Grid Different From Memory Foam or Other Foam Mattresses?

Lets first see what are foams are memory foam made of: they are mainly made of polyurethane. Memory foam has some additional chemicals to increase its density and viscosity (the sinking feeling we all hear about or see). What are the big cons of memory foam mattress?

smart grid in mattress

Sleeps Hot

Memory foam given highly dense material (very little pores for air circulation) retains the body heat and hence starts feeling very hot over time.

Sags Over Time

Memory foam and most other foams even if stretched little bit will break and they sag over time / forms impressions under heavy body parts like hips and shoulders.

Whereas Smart Grid is not like any existing material – it has been developed from a food grade hyper elastic polymer which has pressure absorbing and weight distribution properties. It is the first mattress to have a grid structure – which helps ensure The Sleep Company mattress can take the shape of your body giving a FIRM feel under your back and SOFT feel under your hips/shoulders. Exactly how it cuddles those tiny delicate eggs even under so much pressure, similarly we ensure The Sleep Company mattress takes all the pressure and not your body. So no more tossing or turning!

Relieves Pain Point

Intelligently designed Smart grid is soft at hips and shoulders while being FIRM at back.

Sleeps Cool

The Smart Grid with grid structure promotes air circulation and hence no sweating at night.

Promise Not to Break Away

The Smart Grid can be stretched to more than 1000% retaining its original shape. Hence no more sagging or sinking over time.
